My tent project focuses on the surface, and the possibilities that lie within the endless movement of a surface. For mine, I chose to fold and overlap my tent to create a series of implies spaces that move from inside to outside spaces. This creates an atmosphere of small spaces created by the doubling up of folds, all which connect to the base. Most meet at an axis, with the exception of a few particular points which intentionally break this system.
My hut project is the final phase of the full project’s development from solid to surface to grid. Using only wooden sticks, the hut focuses on hierarchy of grids and different line weights to show the functoin of the grid. My grid is inspired by the Farnsworth house, and shows the movement and elevation of the datums and how they are surrounded by thick beams, some of which support the structure and some which do not connect with the ground, made purely for design. Additionally, my grid takes notes from Sol Lewitt’s Variations of a Cube, with parts of the hut not connecting, or extending into space.
My cave project explores the idea of an extruded mass, a solid that is dug into through a series of boolean operations. My cave is inspired by Le Corbusier’s Notre Dame du Haut, where I took the windows and used that inverted shape to extrude from my mass. From this, sides with pieces blown out open up to a larger opening in the center. This is the first movement of many that make up my carved out cube.
