“This massively scaled urban renovation project in the capital of Korea originally received public pushback, in part due to its $900 million dollar price tag. However, once it opened in 2005, the public grew to love the new addition. What once was a highway was transformed back into a 6.8 mile long river, encouraging life to flourish in and around the river. This new river flows west to east through downtown Seoul and feeds into the large Han River. The history of the river dates back to 1958, where it was covered by concrete and then a highway. The river restoration restored the livelihood of the community and of the ecology that one thrived in the river.”
